Temporary Closure of Forest Hills Street at Arborway

Temporary Closure of Forest Hills Street at Arborway

Access to homes on the block of Forest Hills Street between Cemetery Road and the Arborway will be maintained via the Cemetery Road/Forest Hills Street intersection, but there will be no through access to the Arborway.

Beginning on Wednesday, February 22nd and continuing through the next three weeks, Forest Hills Street will be closed where it meets the westbound (towards the Arboretum) Arborway without access in or out.

This closure is a project requirement to install drainage and utilities in this area.

3-Week Look-Ahead: February 20th to March 10th

Traffic is now, and has been, flowing through Shea Square as a signalized intersection since December, 2016. Motorists coming from the south (towards Roslindale and Hyde Park) along Hyde Park Avenue and seeking to travel to points east, Mattapan, Dorchester, etc. are reminded to use the eastbound mainline of the Arborway, the second right, after the LAZ parking lot driveway. This route is faster and more convenient, for through traffic, than the frontage road passing the West Roxbury District Court and Arborway Gardens.

Throughout the period covered by this look-ahead, work will take place below ground at Forest Hills Station to install electrical components and support structures associated with the jet fans and new head-house. Likewise, over the course of all three weeks, drainage will be installed along the permanent alignment of the Arborway between Washington Street and Shea Square.

Beginning on Wednesday, February 22nd and continuing through the entire period covered by this look-ahead, Forest Hills Street will be closed where it meets the westbound (towards the Arboretum) Arborway without access in or out. This closure is a project requirement to install drainage and utilities in this area. Access to homes on the block of Forest Hills Street between Cemetery Road and the Arborway will be maintained via the Cemetery Road/Forest Hills Street intersection, but there will be no through access to the Arborway.

Work will not take place on Monday, February 20th in recognition of Presidents’ Day.

During the week of February 20th, operations will concentrate on the following:

  • Completing the installation of drainage along Morton Street (Route 203) at the entrance to Forest Hills Cemetery.

  • For the area west (towards the Arboretum) of South Street along the mainline Arborway:At Forest Hills Station, forming and reinforcing of the upper busway expansion parapet wall.

  • Reconnection and reactivation of sections of the 48” water line. All work will take place within the work zone and will not impact traffic.

  • Installation of drainage from the westbound Arborway into Toole Square and South Street.

  • Installation of traffic signal and street lighting conduit at the intersection of South Street/New Washington Street.

During the week of February 27th, operations will focus on the following:

  • For the area west (towards the Arboretum) of South Street along the mainline Arborway:At Forest Hills Station, rubbing and patching the upper busway expansion parapet wall. Note: this is a normal operation designed to improve the look of the parapet wall and does not indicate a problem with its construction.

  • Reactivation of sections of the 48” water line. All work will take place within the work zone and will not impact traffic.

  • Installation of drainage from the westbound Arborway into Toole Square and South Street.

  • Installation of traffic signal and street lighting conduit at the intersection of South Street/New Washington Street.

  • For Washington Street west of Forest Hills Station adjacent to the upper busway:

  • Shifting traffic to a new, temporary alignment, several feet further east (towards the upper busway) to facilitate work in this area. Drivers should note that this temporary alignment will result in a single northbound (towards Centre Street and the monument) lane between Ukraine Way and the entrance to the upper busway. This operation is highly weather-dependent as conditions must be right to allow the application of temporary roadway striping paint. If applicable conditions are not available, this operation will shift from week to week until such time as they are.

During the week of March 6th, work will address the following elements:

  • For the area west (towards the Arboretum) of South Street along the mainline Arborway, reconfiguring signals at South Street/New Washington Street for the stage 3A alignment with traffic west of South Street on its permanent alignment.

  • At Forest Hills Station, rubbing and patching the upper busway expansion parapet wall. Note: this is a normal operation designed to improve the look of the parapet wall and does not indicate a problem with its construction.

  • For Washington Street west of Forest Hills Station adjacent to the upper busway:

  • Assuming successful shifting of the roadway the prior week, installation of utilities in the space vacated by the roadway between Ukraine Way and South Street.

All work is subject to weather conditions. Heavy snow or extreme cold may impact the dates provided in this document.
